Photo repair
There are many reasons that a photograph may need to be repaired. If it is a paper photograph, it can become faded and discolored over the years. Or perhaps the photo had improper tone (brightness and contrast) and color to begin with. There also may be stains, scratches, tears, or holes.
Digital photographs sometimes need repairing as well. Although they do not fade over time the way paper photographs do, there are a variety of potential problems that someone may want fixed. Sometimes people will have a photograph that they really like and that has tremendous value to them, but the photograph could have been taken improperly. There could be excessive backlight, with a dark foreground subject. Or the the tone and color balance could be off. Or perhaps the digital photograph was scanned from a paper photograph that was damaged.
I can perform a variety of repairs on both digital and paper photographs. For digital photographs, I simply edit a copy of the file. If it is a paper photograph, I first take a digital photograph of the paper photo, and then perform all repair work on this digital photograph. The end result of either digital or paper photograph repair can be delivered as a digital picture, or I can make professional prints up to 13" x 19".
I do not use a scanner for obtaining digital copies of paper photographs, as the results are not satisfactory. Properly lighting and photographing a paper photograph provides results that are far superior to what is available by scanner.
The below photographs show an example of paper photograph repair that I have performed. The photograph is approximately 35 years old, and has been contained in the same frame for many years. I removed the photo from the frame, illuminated it in a way that will show the photograph but not cause glare, photographed the paper photo, and returned the paper photo to the frame. With a digital copy of the photo now made, all work is done on this digital copy. The color was adjusted to get rid of the pink overcast, the tone (brightness and contrast) were adjusted to restore proper darks, midtones, and highlights, and the yellow stains were removed.
